As the only sister of Jarl Roald Blood Axe, Lady Runa is expected to do her duty and choose a husband from among the five noblemen her brother has invited to a feast in her honor. An advantageous marriage means a new alliance for her family.

Runa has other plans though, including a lifelong dream to join the temple maidens where she can serve Odin and the other gods.

Captain Thorolf is the most respected man in Jarl Roald’s personal guard. Tasked with safeguarding the beautiful Lady Runa, he works hard to keep the obstinate girl out of trouble. But every time he thinks she’s ready to accept her fate, Runa finds another way to disobey her brother, which forces Thorolf to cover up her mistakes.

When an uninvited guest shows up at the feast and insults Runa’s family, she immediately takes matters into her own hands and threatens the intruder with a knife. Thorolf responds quickly, but Runa has gone too far. She’s embarrassed the only son of a neighboring jarl.

In retaliation for her bad behavior, Roald gives her an ultimatum. Choose a husband now or he will marry her off to the most decrepit lord in the farthest reaches of Norway he can find.

Under advisement from Captain Thorolf, Runa asks permission to visit the home of one of her suitors so she can get to know him better before she decides if he’s a worthy candidate for marriage.

However, Runa has no intention of marrying anyone. In fact, she’s secretly infatuated with Thorolf. But nothing can ever come of it.

Jarl Roald reluctantly agrees to let her go, but sends Thorolf along as his eyes and ears.

On the road to the north country, Runa’s party is attacked, leaving many dead and Captain Thorolf missing.

Runa escapes the violence and seeks assistance from the high priest at the temple.

Reunited with Captain Thorolf, Runa realizes she can longer hide her feelings for him. What they find is mutual admiration and an attraction that could cost them both dearly.

Will Thorolf risk everything he’s worked so hard to accomplish for the love of a forbidden woman? Will Runa once again defy her brother and take a chance on true love?

Excerpt #3:
“Why did you threaten Olvir? Do you think you’re strong enough to kill a man of his size? Any man?” He pulled her blade from his belt. “This is a paring knife, meant for fruits and vegetables, not to maim someone.”
She reached for the weapon, but he refused to give it to her. “I am sure if Jarl Roald wished you to own a weapon, he would have provided you with one.”
She arched a brow. “My brother would do no such thing. He likely fears I’d stab him in the middle of the night.”
His throaty laughter wrapped around her like a warm blanket, heating her insides. “So you’re a dangerous one?” He eyed the blade, then her. “Perhaps I should return this to the kitchens.”
She shrugged. “Do as you must, Captain. I’ll only fetch another in the morn. I prefer being armed. This is a dangerous place.”
“Aye.” He offered her the blade. “If you’d allow me the privilege of getting you a real one.”
She smiled. “You’d do that for me?”
“Tis my duty to keep you safe.”
That was the last thing she wanted to hear from the ridiculously handsome warrior. She’d rather he kissed her and held her close. “Thank you.”
He rubbed his chin. “For what?”
“For getting rid of Olvir.”
He nodded. “The past has a way of catching up, doesn’t it?”
“A very much unwanted past,” she admitted.
“I cannot account for your taste in men, Lady Runa. But as long as I am within earshot, no one will insult you without answering to me.”
There he was again, the honor-bound Thorolf. Though she truly appreciated it, she wanted to see the other side of this man. The one who let his guard down and overindulged in drink, laughed uncontrollably, challenged his brother-in-arms to a wrestling match, fondled a beautiful girl … the kind of man who lived dangerously sometimes. But after observing him closely for nearly a year, she doubted he did any of those things.
“Tis a lovely evening.” She hugged her middle and gazed up at the star-filled sky.
“Aye,” he agreed. “On a night such as this, one cannot doubt the existence of the gods. Allfather is mighty.”
“Yes,” she said, visually worshipping him while he focused on the heavens. “He surely is.” Especially if he made you in his image.

Banished. by Anna Markland. Historical Romance. ARC review.

Vikings evoke images of strong men who allow nothing to stand in their way. They're not normally associated with tender feelings. Wildflowers conjure more personal and sentimental images. In BANISHED, a handful of bluebells picked from a meadow by childhood sweethearts becomes a symbol and eventually an acknowledgement of a love long denied.
Audra longs to leave behind the life of an elite mercenary, a role forced on her after her father’s banishment from the Viking brotherhood.
A journey from exile to the court of King Canute offers a new life, though she fears few men will want her once her history is known.
The bloody feud that precipitated her father’s banishment resurfaces when she is unexpectedly reunited with a childhood sweetheart. Sigmar has always held her heart, but he is the son of her father’s enemy. Sigmar’s hopes for advancement in Canute’s service will be dashed if he obeys the dictates of family honor.
Can Audra and Sigmar lay the hatreds of the past to rest, or will the Viking code of vengeance triumph?

A trip  back to the Viking era, when women could be trained as warriors. Audra and Sigmar we're childhood friends until their fathers started a blood feud and the families were banished from their homeland. .Now many years later they all meet again when they have been called into service by the new king Canute. Sigmar was instrumental in helping Canute claim his crown.  Audra is part of an elite team of female assassins that the king wants as part of his personal guard. The main problem is the extremely bad blood between the two fathers. The king sends his chosen ones to get rid of anyone be believes is a threat to his  new crown.  They must travel through a part of England with a reputation for evil, maybe even magical  creatures.
A wonderful adventure rich in historical details and romance.  The story really helps you visualise life as it was then. Our heroine is a brave warrior, capable of killing a man in twelve different ways. But she still worries about her father´s feelings. Our hero has been promoted above his father and honoured by his king. This does not help his father´s temper, especially when he sees who else is in the running for a place in the king´s guard.

Viking Bears War. (Shift In Time #2) by Anya Nowlan. ARC Review.

A Viking bear is willing to go to any lengths for the right woman...

Isabella's life seems neat and tide. Her future as a nun is set in a tiny convent on the English shoreline, but when a big bear of a man crashes into her life, the spirited woman finds that not all that seemed simple can be so. With the choice of faith and fate laid out before her feet, can she make the right call?

Thor is a werebear worthy of the god his name was given after. The future chief of his clan, he needs a mate to make his destiny whole. Between fending off werewolves and plundering riches, his search seems endless until Isabella. She's everything a mate should be... or at least she's stubborn, feisty and entirely irresistible. She will be his, but at what cost?

With his own clan questioning his choices and wolves howling at the gates, can Thor win over this English belle or are some love stories just not meant to be for Viking bears?

Viking Bear's War is a standalone historical paranormal romance novella with a happy ending, plenty of growly bears, valiant Vikings and curvy, confident women. Don't miss this story if you're looking for a new twist on the sacred bond of fated mates!

Thorbjorn, son of Olav is a mighty Viking warrior and a bear shifter. His village is constantly battling the werewolves.  After one such battle Thor and his men travel to England to top up on supplies. He also wants to find a mate.
Isabella has been living a studying at the convent for five years. She speaks several languages and can read them. When the Vikings come to raid the convent Isabella tries to talk them out of it.
This is the second book of the series,  but if like me you missed the first one, you will still enjoy this. Our hero is an arrogant alpha male, used to just taking what he wants.  He is also intelligent enough to know when to be gentle. Our heroine is fearless. She needs a purpose in life.
A series I'm sure I will get addicted to. I loved it.

Anya Nowlan loves growly bears, hot sex and writing about both. The sexier and naughtier the better. She mostly writes paranormal and fantasy novellas and novels, focusing on shifters and their lucky mates. Her stories are often bite-sized, just what you need to soothe that craving for brave women and strong alphas with a big side-order of some smuttiness.

Anya lives in Boston with her boyfriend and several dogs of varying sizes and levels of mischief. She can't go through a day without chocolate and has an unhealthy addiction to purses, but every girl is allowed her little vices, right?
