Forbidden Heart (Hearts of the Highlands #6) by Paula Quinn. Historical Romance Release & ARC Review.

Add To

Galeren MacPherson never met a lass who wasn’t willing to offer herself up to him. But he doesn’t want that life. In fact, he swore a soon to end six-year vow of chastity to help him dedicate his life to one thing. Battle.

As captain of John Stewart, High Steward of Scotland’s army, Galeren is the only man trusted to bring the high steward’s niece to Scotland. The last thing Galeren wants to be is an escort to a novice from a nunnery. Especially when he sees her in the early morning dawn weeping on the cliffs. Throughout his life, he has felt the urge to flee from things, on the field and off. But he never fled. He conquered the urge and faced whatever it was, head on. But he never faced a force like the one placed in his path.

Novice Silene Sparrow is on her way to Scotland, where she will speak to the church council on her uncle’s behalf so that one day he may gain their support, being next in line for the throne.

Raised in the priory and groomed to give her life to the Lord, she rarely leaves the church’s land in Bamburgh, so she is unprepared for her rough and rowdy Highland escorts. Their leader is a tall, broad, golden warrior who vows to protect her, and does. He is a savage and she does everything to resist him. But how does one resist a man with a kitten cuddled in the crook of his neck? No matter what he has trained to be, he is patient and gentle with her. He begins to get into her blood, her bones. When he kisses her, slowly, passionately, eager for more, he makes her question her future vows.

But Silene’s heart is forbidden. If she lets Captain MacPherson have it, her uncle will lose the church’s support and they likely won’t live a day before he has them hunted down and possibly killed.

How much will Galeren and Silene risk for love?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Novice Nun Silene Sparrow has spent years in the Priory and is happily looking forward to taking her vows,  until her uncle sends for her.  He needs her to persuade the Church council that he's a good man.
Captain Galeren Macpherson and his men are the most trusted in John Stewart the High Steward's retinue.  Galeren doesn't expect delivering one novice to make keeping his vow so difficult.
An exciting historical romance full of danger and intrigue.  Our hero comes from a family you might have met before in previous books,  but this is a stand alone story.
I loved every page.

He’d learned many ways to stay alive, but he never lived.

Tristan MacPherson is a killer for hire. He is elemental, primal, savage, and determined to uphold his reputation that if he agrees to kill a man, the man will surely die. He has seen so much death both on the field and off that he has grown detached to its effects. Until he finds a lass on the brink of death, about to be set aflame as one infected with the terrible sickness, and his heart begins to beat again.

After losing six years of her life protected from a fire-breathing madman outside the walls of her father’s castle, Lady Rose Callanach is allowed the freedom to spend the winter with her cousin. When she is infected with the plague on the way and left in a village to die, she is saved by a beautiful masked man. A man infamous for showing no mercy, and yet, it is the very first thing he gives her. She will never forget it. She will forgive him anything because of it.

But can she forgive him when she learns that he has been hired to kill her father? And can Tristan save her when the fiery monster finally returns for her and sets her world up in flames?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lady Rose Callanach has not been outside her father's castle for six years because the person who killed her mother is probably after her as well.  Her uncle has at last persuaded her father that she will be safe with him and her cousin.
Tristan MacPherson is a legendary assassin known for bringing justice to those who think they are above the laws of decency.
The black death is ravaging the land wiping out whole villages,  everyone is scared of catching it.  Sometimes they take extreme measures to stop the spread.
This is an emotional and action packed story filled with vicious battles and danger for everyone.  Our unlikely hero will have a life changing experience.  Our brave, but incredibly innocent heroine will learn that not everything she has been told is true.
A very exciting book that is part of a series but easily read on it's own.
I loved it.

Elias Macpherson is traveling with his bestfriend, brother Simon. They come to the village of Seven Oaks for a brief respite, but hear that the Black Death is starting to ravage England.  Can they seal off the village before the sickness strikes or should they run north to Scotland???
Lily Bennett is the loving wife of the apothecary. She helps him keep them all healthy.  She has come through a terrible time,  has she the strength to face more battles.
This is a very emotional story that you will need the tissues for.  Our wonderful hero is a warrior to his core, but even he can't fight everything.  If you have read some of this author's previous books you might recognize who his parents are by his description.
Our heroine is just as much a warrior but a lot of her battles are against an unseen enemy.
I loved every page and I'm hoping that a certain green eyed man who appeared near the end is going to be the hero for the next book.

Heart of Stone (Hearts of the Highlands #3) by Paula Quinn. Historical Romance Release & ARC Review.

She was like a living flame, an all-consuming fire, lighting up the way so he could find everything he'd lost!

When widowed Nicholas MacPherson, Earl of Rothbury, returns from a two-year pilgrimage and finds himself in desperate need of a governess for his son, the last person he wants to see at his door is Julianna Feathers, the lass he had loved since he was a child servant in her father’s castle. He doesn’t want her back in his life, but his son needs her. Soon, Nicholas realizes that he needs her, too. Her familiar smiles and the ease he feels when they speak—even to argue—becomes harder to resist. But he doesn’t trust love. Her love. Still, when she stirs the rubble in search of his heart, the heart she once knew, he is helpless to stop her.

Julianna Feathers once lived the life of the privileged, but that was before the Scots attacked her castle and killed everyone in it. Before her father’s debts left her penniless and without title. Before she married a monster. Dreams of the love of her youth gave her strength to run, to free herself and find him. She knows him as William Stone. She let him go once because she was a coward. But she has changed. She has grown up, and she wants him back…until she meets him and decides she doesn’t like the earl with his new name and the diamond-hard set of his eyes against her. But she sees him beneath the rocks and rubble and she resolves to help him find his way out. Falling in love with him all over again is the easy part. Being torn from his arms by an enemy from their past is something else entirely.

Will their love survive?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Julianna Feathers left the convent after her abusive husband died there. She's earning a living by writing and delivering messages.  There is a possibility that this latest message could be a chance at a good job.  Also she is hoping to find the one man she has loved her whole life, the one she sent away.
Nicholas MacPhearson has had a very hectic few years.  He found his brothers and lost his wife.  He did not handle that well.  Now he is home and his son is screaming in fear of him all the time.
This is a very exciting adventure.  The characters are strong and loveable. You will fall for them on the first page.  Lots of twists and turns and family complications give us plenty to enjoy.
There is a lot of back story that comes in previous books in the series.  I have read them so found this more enjoyable than I think it would be on it's own.
I loved it.

Heart of Shadows (Hearts of the Highlands #2) by Paula Quinn. Historical Romance Release & ARC Review.

The light tempted him away from his purpose, and though he enjoyed what he could find in the light, he chose to stay in the shadows cast by it...

Commander Torin Gray is known among the Bruce’s most elite Highland warriors as Shadow because of his prowess at infiltrating any English stronghold and discovering its weaknesses before bringing the king’s army to its doors. His greatest skill is gaining trust and friendship from his enemies while planning their demise. He feels no shame or regret for the things he’s done, the people he’s killed. He wants no reward. After watching the English massacre his family when he was a boy, he vowed revenge on them all, one stronghold at a time. For him, the Scottish War of Independence is personal and he will not be stopped.

But nothing could have prepared him for the beautiful outlaw he’s about to face, or how bravely she draws him out of the shadows and into the light.

Braya Hetherington has always wanted to raid and fight like the men in her family, but her skill as a reiver is frowned upon because she’s a woman—especially because she is better at raiding than the men.

Having already lost one brother to war with the Scots, Braya is a warrior who seeks peace. So when a handsome knight appears at the side of the Warden of the Western Marches and is accused of murdering four of her thieving cousins, she must discover if he is innocent, or risk war. But Torin Gray is unlike any man she’s ever met before. He enjoys the scent of a flower and he doesn’t find her unappealing when she almost beats him at practice. Mostly, his needful kisses and possessive touch make her feel weak. And she likes it.

Will she forgive him when she discovers he is here to bring the hated Scots down upon them? Or must she kill him before he succeeds?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Commander Torin Gray is a spy for Robert the Bruce.  He gets into the enemy castles or keeps and works from the inside to help the attacking army.  He has lived only for revenge since the English killed his family.
Braya Hetherington is just as much a warrior as her brother,  and better than most of their men.  They are a huge family of English reivers living on the border between Scotland and England.  Times are hard and food is scarce. Sometimes some of her cousins do foolish things,  like rob the wrong person.
This is a story full of emotion,  intrigue and adventure.  Our hero is torn between his duty and his heart,  which has never happened before.  Our heroine has never had a man treat her like an equal before,  even when they know she could easily kill them.
We also have a very special animal that is just as interesting a character as the humans.
This is part of a series that I am totally addicted to,  but it's easily read on it's own.  Be warned,  once you have read one you will want to read the rest.
I loved it.

Heart of Ashes (Hearts of the Highlands #1) by Paula Quinn. Historical Romance ONLY 99c. & ARC Review.

A Scottish warrior and a Norman maiden clash in this stunning epic!

Cainnech (Cain) MacPherson’s hatred for the English was born when he was a lad of seven, the day they raided his village and killed his family. They took everything from him without mercy and tossed him onto the battlefield, where the memory of love faded to dust and left nothing in its wake but violence.

Now, as Robert the Bruce’s most formidable, most lethal warrior, he wreaks havoc on his enemy, taking land by force and without mercy. But when he raids a small castle in Northumberland, he faces his greatest opponent yet—a bold, beautiful Norman lass who will see him dead at any cost rather than give up her home…even if it means tearing open his armored heart and stirring the ashes that remain.

Aleysia d’Argentan will do anything to keep the hated Scots out of her castle and away from her villagers. She has prepared for this day for the last four years, building traps in the forest, poisoning the grain, and hiding daggers wherever she could use them to kill her enemy. But she isn’t prepared for the brawny, brooding Highland warlord who invades her life—and her heart. He is an infuriating, irresistible opponent with a curious touch, a smoldering kiss, and a reluctant smile that begins to shine on her alone.

Can the ashes of his heart be stirred into flame by his enemy?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Since her brother was killed by the Scottish, Aleysia d'Argentan has prepared herself, her castle and lands for when they descend on them.  It has been four years of hard work and planning.  Now they are coming and she is ready.
Cainnech MacPherson is a Commander in the army of Robert the Bruce.  This latest castle he has been told to take looks abandoned,  it should be easy.
Our heroine is a very courageous young lady who is determined to protect her home. She is clever, cunning and well organised.
Our hero is a warrior through and through,  with no softer feelings.
A wonderful story with lots of excitement and times where I was thinking "you go girl".  All the characters are fun and I hope we will meet them again.
I loved every page.
