Game of Spies by Pamela Mingle. Historical Romance Release & ARC Review.

Add To

Life as a lady-in-waiting for Mary Queen of Scots isn’t at all what Isabel Tait expected. But she must either tolerate the mindless partying and ceaseless backstabbing of Mary’s other ladies, or risk being sent home to a forced marriage. She’d almost rather return to her family—if not for a certain handsome gentleman who arouses a new desire in her, something she’s never before experienced. Of course, he’ll never notice her…

Gavin Cade is on a mission. Tasked with spying on the Queen, he’s found the perfect woman to help. Sweet, shy Isabel is an easy target for his charms. Before he knows what’s happened, he is the one beguiled. With the fate of England in the balance, he must keep his plan to expose the treasonous queen a secret, or he will never seduce his sweet English rose.

Because there’s one thing he’s learned about Isabel Tait…she’s got a backbone of steel and may never forgive him.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Isabel Tait has never left home before but her mother wants to get remarried and wants her out of the home.
Luckily before she is forced into a loveless marriage she is offered a respectable alternative.  Little does our naive heroine know,  that what she's getting into  when she joins the exciled Queen Mary's ladies could kill her.
Gavin Cade has been sent to spy on Mary.  It's a job he hates but it needs to be done.  Danger is everywhere and nobody can be trusted.  Our hero has reason not to trust easily and a house full of scheming females is just about his worst nightmare.
An intriguing story with great characters.  It might be easy for us to know who the bad guys are,  but not our characters.  How many will die before the full plot is uncovered????
I loved it.

Pamela Mingle is a former teacher and librarian who was fortunate enough to choose writing as a third career. Or maybe it chose her. :) She loves to create romantic tales that play out against historical events and always includes some humor in her books.

Pam and her husband enjoy walking in the UK--even though she's done her share of whining on those fifteen-mile days. The walking trips have been an ideal way to discover new settings for her books.

A determined sister . . .
Madeleine Vernon’s dreams should be filled with elegant gowns and marriageable men. Instead, she dreams of avenging her brother’s death. But when she’s captured by the queen’s men, she’s forced to become a spy by her mysterious yet undeniably attractive captor.

A rakish spy . . .
After years of working for his father in Queen Elizabeth’s service, Nicholas Ryder is close to going his own way. But now he’s got a feisty beauty he must protect or risk her execution as a traitor to the crown. She’s a distraction he can’t afford, but he also can’t stop thinking about her.

A dangerous lie . . .
It is Nicholas’s job to foil plots against Elizabeth, and he sends Maddy into a household of suspected traitors to garner what information she can. As the line between captor and prisoner blurs, deceit, betrayal, and desire become a perilous mix. Ultimately, Nicholas must decide whether duty to the queen is more important than winning Maddy’s heart.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Mistress Madeline Vernon made the mistake of taking part in a rebellion against Queen Elizabeth.  She was bullied by the men who took her prisoner into taking work with a suspect household or following her brother to the executioner.  She is in a high risk situation,  not knowing who to trust.
Nicholas Ryder works for his father as part of the Queen's information gathering network.  He is not happy about putting a woman at risk,  but needs must.  He would much rather look after his nephew and his roses.
The danger and intrigue in this period of history is fascinating. Lots of action and emotion make this a real page turner.
I loved the unusual characters.

Mr. Hugh Grey and Miss Eleanor Broxton share a scintillating liaison the night before he leaves for war in Canada. The memory sustained him for the years he was away. Now, the reputed rake is back, knighted, and he’s got enough money to right the estate his father left in ruins. What would make Sir Hugh Grey’s world perfect is the lovely Eleanor by his side.

Their attraction is sizzling, and the sweet way Hugh is wooing her—a kitten, kisses in the moonlight, and expert help in lighting her dreary work space—makes Eleanor dream of forever with her strapping knight. But she will not risk a scandal, which could ruin his newfound respectability and esteem, especially in her father’s eyes. When Hugh discovers what she’s been hiding, it could drive them apart forever.

Hugh Grey has finished his army service and returned home after the death of his father.  After more than two years away he has a lot of responsibilities to take on.  He carries a lot of emotional baggage and often speaks before he thinks.
Miss Eleanor Broxton is an independent and strong minded young woman.  She is working extremely hard towards a definite goal.  The last thing she needs is the distraction that comes with the man who plays a big part in her reasons for working so hard.
Get a big box of tissues ready because this is a very emotional story.  Can our hero put away his harsh views and learn how to forgive?.
A lovely heroine with a huge heart.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.
