Scandal in Spades (Lords of Chance #1) by Wendy LaCapra. Historical Romance Release & ARC Review.

Add To

The Marquess of Bromton has just learned that he’s a bastard. Feeling his honor is at stake, he attempts to bestow his estate upon a rightful heir by manipulating a high-stakes card game. But the winner demands more than Bromton bargained for—a marriage…to his spinster sister. Lady Katherine may be the least marriageable lady in all of England, but a child of their union would be a rightful heir…

Scandal has hardened Lady Katherine and narrowed her world to duty and family. There’s nothing to be trusted in the Society she left behind…especially not the imperious marquess with his single-minded pursuit. Or his knee-weakening kisses.

Except, the more their connection deepens, the more Bromton surprises Katherine. But the truth about their courtship could destroy everything…

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Giles Langley the Marquess of Bromton has learned news that devastated all he held important.  Now for the sake of his honour he must try and put things right.  That's why he has just cheated at cards.  He played to lose but the man he played with has a different agenda.
Lady Katherine Markham was the subject of a cruel jibe after two betrothals and no wedding.  Now five years later she has decided to stay a spinster. Unfortunately her brother has plans to bring a friend home.  Last time he did that she was humiliated again.  She must act first.
Our hero has not had a particularly happy life and sees no way to change that.
Our heroine wants nothing more than to protect her family from more scandal.  She would also protect herself from more heartache.

It can be embarrassing to be reading in a coffee shop and crying at the same time.  (You get funny looks)  That's what happened to me when I was reading this,  especially near the end.  You can't help but get involved in our characters emotions.
This book will certainly play on your sympathy.  There is a grand romance to go with it though,  so you will be sure to enjoy it all.  I did.

Wendy is a 2012 Golden Heart Finalist writing Historical Romance with a touch of intrigue & suspense. Her debut novel, Lady Vice, the first in a trilogy about three Ladies who refuse to play by society's rules, will be released by Entangled Scandalous in March 2015.

Wendy was born a Jersey Girl while most of her extended family lived in Maine. Trekking up and down the Northeast coast in the backseat of a car gave her plenty of opportunity not only to fight with her sister, but to read, to listen to her dad tell stories from history, and to dream up stories of her own.

She lives in NYC with her husband. Things she loves besides writing and reading and being an aunt to seven nieces and nephews include travel (46 states and all 7 continents), old things, pine trees, wine and pasta.

Duchess Decadence.( The Furies #3) by Wendy La Capra. My ARC Review.

London, 1784

Thea Worthington, Duchess of Wynchester divides her time between social engagements and playing her luck against fickle fortune. Yet every gamble is only a bluff—a means to hide from the pain deep within her, and the loss of a babe she never held in her arms. Now Thea's luck is about to run out. Her estranged husband has returned and seeks a reunion...

Plagued with guilt over what happened to his wife three years ago, the Duke of Wynchester has kept his distance. The duke is resolved to piece his family back together, especially now that he's discovered his beloved brother—long thought dead—still lives. But Thea's lovely, porcelain facade is on the verge of cracking...spurred on by the duke's brother's secretive, malevolent animosity.

With everything riding on her future, Thea plays a daring game of chance for love and her marriage...and this time, the dice are most certainly rigged.

This book is the last of a series, but is easily read as a stand a lone. However I personally wish I had read the others before it. Now I know how the others finished.
Thea Worthington, in reality the Duchess of Wynchester is now known to the ton as Duchess Decadence.  She walked out on her husband after tragedy struck. She hides behind a happy face, and spends her time gambling . That is until she finds out her husband could be in mortal danger. She must find a way to protect him.
The Duke of Wynchester is a strictly proper Duke,  used to hiding his emotions from everyone. That includes his very improper Duchess. He knows he is to blame for her pain but has no idea how to put it right.
The evil that threatens the Duke comes from within his family.  It could not only destroy him, but it could even threaten the King.
A wonderful, exciting, historical romance. Our brave and loyal heroine is incredibly  innocent considering her reputation.  Her best friends are her source of strength. Our "hero" needs to learn how to open himself to emotion.  Plenty of danger,  intrigue,  and some hot sex scenes.  I loved it.

About the book:

All of Lady Abigail Hurst's dreams seem to be coming true when at long last her childhood sweetheart asks for her hand. But when a maid is found dead, and her betrothed is the chief suspect, Abigail begins to wonder just what manner of man she's marrying...
The Marquess of Longcroft, Edmund Townsend, has always preferred complex mathematical equations to the trappings of society. And love? Love is a non-quantifiable concept. Still, Lady Abigail is his sister's friend, and he finds himself drawn into the mystery of her affianced…even as he begins to anticipate Lady Abigail's company with unfathomable pleasure.
Investigating the murder may reveal more than the sordid truth.

It may just reveal the love Abigail always wanted...a little too late.

About the novella:
Catherine Linwood is amongst the favored of Tudor Queen Mary–until her physician father dies mysteriously. She’s distraught, shunned and desperate for answers. Catherine's only ally is Sir Brandon FitzAlan...who is willing to risk his life to protect hers. While the handsome stranger’s courage and wit soon capture her heart, his true allegiance and purpose is uncertain.

Brand is well used to the lies and shadows of court. Yet nothing prepares him for his sizzling attraction to innocent Catherine, or the deadly plot she is tangled in, for her father took a secret to his grave that could tear Catholic England apart. With one chance at salvation, Brand and Catherine begin a cross-country journey that reveals the shocking truth...and a burning passion that could save or destroy them both.

This is a action packed story. With some hot sex scenes. And lots of adventure.   Our unlikely hero is battling emotional demons from his past. He doesn't have any faith in himself. Our heroine is an intelligent, but innocent woman who is the victim of politics.
I loved this book and will look for more from this author.
