How to Best a Marquess (The Raven Club #2) by Tina Gabrielle. Historical Romance Release & ARC Review.

Add To

Lady Ellie Swift learned at an early age that men were more trouble than they’re worth. Now she’s all grown up and is the toast of society. Only she has secret ambitions to run her brother’s infamous gambling establishment—the Raven Club. Everything is progressing as planned until the man who broke her heart, Hugh Vere, the Marquess of Deveril, wants to take over the club. Dark, dominant, and strikingly handsome, Hugh’s reputation for sin precedes him, and suddenly, her dreams—and her heart—are in jeopardy.
As rakish as Hugh appears, he has a sharp mind for business. No one stands in the way of what he wants, not even the fiery-haired beauty from his past. From the moment he sees her again sparks fly, but he knows better than to fall for the lady. According to Ellie, the battle lines have been drawn and Hugh doesn’t stand a chance. But the nearly combustible chemistry between them is hard to ignore, and soon the club is not the only prize he wants…

Each book in the Raven Club series is STANDALONE:
* How to Tempt an Earl
* How to Best a Marquess

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lady Ellie Swift loves everything about her brother's gambling hall. She always wears a mask when she is down among the customers especially when watching the boxers fighting.
Hugh Vere the Marquess of Deveril has recently returned from the war.  Fighting in the boxing ring is a good way to let off steam and challenge himself.  Another way will be to buy the gambling hall from his friend.  The problem is someone else wants it,  so they have to compete with each other to see who will be best for the club.
The history between our characters will make the sparks fly.  Our heroine wants to be independent, run the club and help abused women.
Our hero loves a challenge,  but also needs to protect our heroine even when she doesn't want it.
Good fun with lovely characters.  A little danger and some steamy scenes.
I loved it.

Grace Ashton is desperate to stop her father from gambling everything away. There is only one person who might be able to stop him,  the owner of the club he gambles in.  She already secretly works to help pay the bills,  but it's not enough to save them from ruin.
Ian Swift the new Earl of Castleton has owned and run "The Raven" casino for years.  He doesn't see why he needs to change his life just because his brother died.
This is an amusing and at times emotional story. The characters are fun and not above using guilt to get their own way.
Family, and what we will do for them is the mainstay of the story. Our intelligent heroine will try anything to save her family from ruin.  Our stubborn hero is determined to have his cake and eat it.
I thoroughly enjoyable read.

Add To

The daughter of an infamous art forger, Chloe Somerton grew up poor. Desperate to aid her sisters, she’d picked a pocket…or two. Now circumstances have changed, and Chloe has a chance to marry a young, wealthy lord. Only his mentor—a dark, dangerous duke—stands in her way. The duke knows about her past, and she’ll do anything to keep him from telling.

The moment Michael Keswick, the Duke of Cameron, sees Chloe Somerton, he recognizes her as a fraud. The stunning beauty with sapphire eyes and golden hair now appears to be a proper lady, but he knows better. What begins as a battle of wills soon escalates into a fierce attraction. In Chloe, Michael finds peace from the memories of war, but he refuses to marry…and she won’t settle for anything less.

Michael Keswick,  the Duke of Cameron is suffering from PTSD. He knows other ex-soldiers have ended up in asylums and some even committed suicide because of the effects the war had on them.  He is also keeping a promise to the man who took the bullet meant for him by guiding his son in learning to cope with his title.
Miss Chloe Somerton is the youngest of three sisters.  They had rough times in the past,  but now her sisters have married very well.  Chloe should have no worries, but she did something very bad when they were poor and now someone has recognised her.
Dealing with bad memories can always be helped by talking with someone you trust.
This is a very emotional and sometimes difficult story to read.  Our hero doesn't like to be seen as weak.  Our heroine will show him what real strength is.  A beautiful ending to this lovely series.
