The Forbidden Duke (The Untouchables #1) by Darcy Burke. Historical Romance My Review.

Add To

Spinster Miss Eleanor Lockhart is suddenly homeless and employment is her only option. Ruined after succumbing to a scoundrel’s excessive charm nearly a decade ago, she’s lucky to obtain a position as a paid companion and committed to behaving with the utmost propriety. She definitely shouldn’t be in the arms of a man capable of utterly destroying what little remains of her reputation...

Titus St. John, Duke of Kendal, is known as the Forbidden Duke, a mysterious, intimidating figure who enters Society just once each year at his stepmother’s ball. A decade ago, he was a devil-may-care rake until his idle roguery brought about the ruin of Eleanor Lockhart—and his resulting self-imposed isolation. Now she’s back, and she needs his help. But by “saving” her, he may just ruin her life all over again.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Miss Eleanor Lockhart has got to find somewhere to live and an income since her father lost everything.  She destroyed her chances of marriage years ago by allowing a rake a kiss and being ruined.  Hopefully she can be a lady's companion.
Titus St. John the Duke of Kendal regrets the way he and his friends behaved years ago.  He now stays away from society and concentrates on his lands and family.
A lovely romance that gives everyone hope for a second chance.  All the characters are a lot of fun and learn what is really important in life and what is not.
This is the beginning of a fabulous series.  Each book can be read alone.
I loved it.

Felix Havers,  Earl of Ware is always thinking up entertainments for everyone to enjoy.  Surrounding himself with happy people helps him hide his own unhappiness. He has grown up seeing the proof with his own eyes that love is a destructive emotion.
Miss Sarah Colton is busy finding a way to save money for her project.  Her parents want her to marry,  but that doesn't look like happening,  so she must prepare herself for spinsterhood.  She has nothing against marriage but will only marry a man she loves.
An emotional,  but fun read with lovely characters.  They will run through the whole range of emotions that love and loss can cause. The games are naughty and so innocent compared to how we think today make me wish I lived in an equally innocent time.
Great fun.

“It’s time for you to marry,” Father said, surprising no one. Or so Sarah assumed. Anthony knew how desperately they wanted her to marry, and she had to think Felix did too. Of course he did. Sarah was the first person to complain about the pressure they applied.
“Past time, one might say,” Sarah murmured and tried not to send an exasperated look toward her mother.
“There’s no need to be saucy,” Mother said tartly.
“Why must Felix and I be privy to Sarah’s humiliation?” Anthony asked.
Humiliation? Sarah had been annoyed, mildly embarrassed even, but not humiliated. At least not until now. She tossed a withering stare at her brother. He had the grace to wince and look away.
“There is a reason,” Mother said before inclining her head toward Sarah’s father.
Father coughed. “Er, yes. We wondered if it might make sense for you, Felix, to wed Sarah.”
Humiliation didn’t begin to describe the emotion swirling inside Sarah and erupting in her cheeks. Surely they were about to catch fire.
She would have snapped at her father or mother or both, but words simply wouldn’t come.
Anthony stood. “You can’t ambush Felix like that!” At Sarah’s intake of breath, he added, “Or Sarah.”
Sarah didn’t bother sending him another acid glare.
Their mother pursed her lips at Anthony. “We’re not ambushing him. Felix is like family. He’s well aware of Sarah’s sad state.”
Oh, this was just getting better and better. Now she was in a sad state?
“Furthermore, Felix is in need of a wife. Your father and I discussed it, and we think this is an excellent match.”
Sarah couldn’t bear to meet Felix’s gaze, so she stared at the floor. Had the patterned carpet always had that odd mushroom shape next to the leg of the settee?
“I’m glad you discussed it,” Anthony said with a great deal of sarcasm. “You might have discussed it with Felix, however.” He looked toward Felix. “Did they?”
Now Sarah chanced a look at him. Felix shook his head. To his credit, he didn’t look surprised or annoyed or pale or anything other than what he’d appeared since she’d arrived: uncomfortable.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lady Lavinia Gillingham is quite happy being a wallflower.  She is a bluestocking who loves digging in the dirt for fascinating rocks.  Having someone thrust her into to society's limelight is not at all what she wants. Her mother couldn't be happier.
William Beckett,  the Marquess of Northam may have a reputation as a rake, but in reality is a quiet and sometimes melancholy man.  Because of things that happened in his past,  he has a tendency to bury himself in music and poetry.  He wants to help young women like his sister who suffered at the hands of society.  Unfortunately not all of them appreciate his "help".
A very amusing historical romance with lovable characters.  Our sensible heroine has her own plans for her life and they don't include being set upon by men who couldn't see her until her name was in print.  Our hero has a darkness about him that he can only control through music.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.  I love this series of stand alone stories.

The room wasn’t overly large, and it was—seemingly—empty. It also wasn’t terribly well lit, with a low fire burning in the grate and a pair of sconces flickering on the wall on either side of the fireplace. She was either beneath the desk or behind the curtain. He couldn’t see the underside of the desk from the door. It wasn’t a pedestal as Lord Evenrude’s had been. Circling around, he saw no one hiding there. That left the draperies on the window. He moved to the far wall and instantly noted the slight lump behind the blue damask. Moving forward, he reached for the fabric but hesitated before he pushed it aside. What if it wasn’t her? The fabric moved, and she bared her face. “You found me.” Her dark gaze registered surprise. “Oh, it’s you!” “It’s me.” “Are you still looking for a place to hide?” “I am.” She reached for his lapel and held the drapery wide, pulling him into the darkness beside her. “He’ll be done counting shortly. If he isn’t already.” “I should probably hide somewhere else,” he said, though he was loath to move. Ensconced in the dark with Lavinia, he was acutely aware of her heat and the intoxicating scent of lilies and honeysuckle. “Yes, I suppose you should.” She turned toward him, and they were so close, her breasts brushed against his chest. “Sorry,” she murmured. God, he wasn’t. He was only sorry he had to leave. “Before you go, I wanted to thank you again for the fossils.” She whispered, her breath tickling his neck as she spoke. “I can’t stop looking at them. They’re absolutely extraordinary. I hope I have reason to visit Devon one day so I can hunt for my own.” “I hope you do too. Consider yourself welcome at Waverly Court any time.” “That’s very kind of you.” He heard the smile in her voice and resisted the urge to run his fingers over her mouth so he could feel the curve of her lips. He really should go— But first, he wanted to ask her something. “Do you know the Duchess of Kendal?” “Yes, but not well. Fanny’s sister is a good friend of hers. Why?” Why indeed. Beck wanted to enlist Lavinia’s help to see if the Duchess might be able to help him learn who SW and DC might be. However, if the Duchess had been part of a scandal, she might prefer to leave those memories in the past. Furthermore, he wasn’t sure he should include Lavinia in any of this. And yet, he found he simply couldn’t resist. “Do you know what happened with the Duchess when she was out in Society—maybe sixteen years ago? The Duke mentioned something, and I was curious. Because my sister was out at the same time.” He added the last because he felt he had to share a reason for his inquiry. Still, he hated bringing Helen up since he didn’t want to answer too many questions about her, particularly regarding her fate. “She was compromised. A gentleman—I can’t remember who—wooed her. They were caught kissing, and he refused to marry her. She was ruined. It was horrible because it wasn’t even her fault. It’s so unfair. Men can kiss whomever they want, and women are blamed for any indiscretion.” “The key is to not get caught. It sounds as though this gentleman was rather inept.” “Are you saying it was his fault?” She sounded surprised. “Most would argue they were at least both to blame.” “Certainly she retains some culpability, but a decent gentleman would ensure they could kiss and not get caught.” “And how would they do that?” Something in her tone changed. Her voice lowered, and it felt as though she’d moved just a hair closer. If he leaned just a tiny bit forward, he was sure he’d feel her breasts again. God, how he wanted to. “They might hide themselves behind a drapery in the library.” “During hide-and-seek?” Beck’s cock lengthened and grew stiff as the air around them heated. “Probably not. In that case, someone is actually looking to find them.” “And yet here we are.” Her voice had changed again, going nearly breathless. “Yes, here we are.” “Are you going to, then?” she asked, her breasts grazing his chest as she edged herself against him. “Kiss me.” “By God, I think I am.” “Oh, good.”

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Simon Hastings,  the Duke of Romsey is trying to think of a way to help a friend and save a young woman from scandal.
Our hero is known as the Duke of Ruin.  Everyone believes he got away with murder.
Miss Diana Kingman proposed a convenient marriage to escape from her father.  Now the man she was to marry is gone and she needs to escape more than ever.
Our heroine has suffered years of emotional abuse from her father and is desperate to make her own decisions in life.
An emotional and amusing journey up the full length of the England and back. We have wonderful characters that both have problems in their past that could come back to bite them.
This story does follow on from "The Duke of Ice" but you can easily read it as a stand alone.
A thoroughly entertaining read.  I have loved all in this series.
