Five years ago Megan and Liam were in love. Set to marry, tragedy struck when word arrived that Liam had been killed. Devastated, Megan attempted to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Now, five years later, Megan finds herself homeless and without any hope of a family. Living with her brother and his family, all she has to live for are her horses, Legend and Lady Belle. She has her sights set on winning the elusive British Triple Crown with Legend and creating a racing dynasty.
Liam faked his death five years ago to get close to Napoleon in order to learn the man’s secrets. Now, he finds himself back on British soil with no clue as to what he is supposed to do with his life. Having been a prisoner of war and seen the horror of the battlefield, he suffers from debilitating nightmares and physical ailments that make him question his manhood and sometimes his sanity. Memories of Megan, the love of his life, kept him sane when he would have gone mad. But he quickly finds a dream and reality are two very different things. When Megan eavesdrops on a conversation and finds out her beloved Liam is alive, she doesn’t know whether to rejoice or let her feelings of anger and betrayal rule her. Does she want to see him? Can she trust him with her heart after what he’s done? Can she convince him, her weary warrior, to trust her with the nightmare of his past, or will it all be for naught as danger surrounds Megan, threatening her life and their future happiness once more? And will Liam be able to overcome the obstacles from his past to save the woman he loves so they can have a future and lifetime of love together? This is a story of love, redemption, and healing. Liam McTavish was a spy for the English crown during the war with France. Unfortunately he was caught and tortured for a very long time. That and his time at war in America have left him with severe PTSD.  His family all think him dead and he wants to keep it that way. His superiors think differently and trick him into facing his past.
Megan is the love he left behind. She has been married and widowed in the years since Liam's "death". She has every reason to hate him for abandoning her. Now Megan spends all her time training race horses, much to the dismay of the men in the racing world.
This is a very suspenseful story. Murder attempts, nightmares and one extremely angry woman. Our hero is trying desperately to make a new life without hurting anyone. Who is trying to kill Megan??

ABOUT TAMMY JO BURNS

20130630_192426-225x300
From a young age I could always be found carrying around books to read while watching my grandmother's soap operas with her. I read anything and everything I could get my hands on and even made up skits and stories for my friends and me to act out. Once I outgrew the children's and YA books, my mom introduced me to an entirely new world - contemporary romance. Upon discovering I had a love for history I began devouring historical romances. One day, sitting in a college British History class, something the professor said made me think, I wonder. I quickly called mom (also a writer) and ran the idea by her. After being told, "Of course you can do it, you're my daughter," the rest, as they say, is history. I currently share my love of reading with the next generation as a high school librarian, and share my personal life with my demanding dog trapped in a cat's body, Ajax.

Synopsis:

As Director of The War Office, Stuart McKenzie, has proven himself capable of making difficult decisions in times of crisis and keeping government secrets safe. When he walks in on someone ransacking his study he quickly moves to apprehend them, only to be tossed on his back as the burglar escapes into the night. Cassie’s father has become a pawn in the fight against Napoleon. When the enemy kidnaps him, she will do anything it takes to get him back – including stealing government secrets from Stuart McKenzie, the Director of the War Office. When Cassie is caught, she reluctantly agrees to Mack’s assistance as there is something far more sinister going on. As Mack embarks on his mission, he will find that enemies are often closer than one would think and that sometimes your ally will come in the least likely form. When passion erupts between Mack and Cassie, they find their lives forever altered. But just as they believe their lives to be free of danger, a new threat is lurking about, promising to rip their happiness away from them. Will they be able to trust each other enough to defeat this new threat, or will they be torn apart for all eternity?

MY REVIEW:
★★★★★

This is the 2nd book in a series, but reads easily as a stand alone.
Cassie is a very intelligent woman, Her father is an inventor who has been hidden by the War Office. She has been trying to get the Director of the War Office to tell her where he is for the last year. She is doing that by making a pest of herself by going to the office every Monday to ask the Director. Cassie has also been writing articles for The Times newspaper under another name. (because women would not get published)These articles are calling the government to account on many things.
Mack  is the director ,and a very busy man who has had many attempts on his life. He also caught a bullet meant when he tried to save the Prime Minister from an assassin. He has not got the time to tell Cassie where he has hidden her father. He is trying to protect him and his important inventions. The pesky woman will not just go away and let him get on with more important work.
One night the stakes are raised and Mack must listen to her. He then has to rescue her father with a lot of help from her.
This is exactly my type of story. Strong intelligent heroine and a truly heroic hero. There are many times I wanted to knock Mack upside his head, but Cassie did it for me. Plenty of adventure, danger and humour along with a beautiful romance. I will be reading the 1st book when I have time, and any more books that are added to the series. I loved it.
