Growing up on the Isle of Moon, Brigitta knows nothing of her past, except that she is Embraced: born with powers that forced her into hiding. Everything changes when she learns she’s a princess, hidden away from her villainous half-brother who now rules the kingdom. But he knows about Brigitta, and he’ll do anything to get her back. Unless a certain roguish pirate has anything to say about it…

Rupert is both an infamous pirate and a sorcerer with the power to harness the wind. He’s been waiting nineteen years for revenge—and he needs Brigitta to get it. What begins as a kidnapping of the fiery beauty turns into a fierce attraction. But can he win the captive princess’s heart?

Brigitta has been brought up on the Isle of the Moons with a group of other orphaned girls.  They are all "Embraced" that means they have a special power. This has in the past has meant a death sentence.   One of the girls recently married and became a queen,  and is about to give birth.  Now all her adopted sisters are traveling to see her.  Unfortunately someone has discovered Brigitta's real identity and that puts all of them in danger.
Rupert is a pirate and a wind sorcerer.  He has been raiding the ships of a particular king for years.  His goal is vengeance for the murder of his family.  Only his most trusted men know his true identity.  If he can capture Brigitta he can ransom her and destroy her brother.
This is a lovely long book with action all the way through.  We get magic,  political intrigue and romance.  A hero with very unusual powers that are more dangerous than we might expect.  A heroine who nobody can hide anything from,  but is incredibly innocent.  Some of the secondary characters, especially the nun and the shifter  are lots of fun,  and bring us more than a few giggles.  I have read both books in the series so far, but you could read this on it's own.  I'm really looking forward to reading the rest.  I loved every page.

Kerrelyn Sparks apparently has issues with reality. After writing more than a dozen books about vampires, she has now completely gone off the deep end and wound up on another planet. But how thrilling that she can share this magical new world with her readers! Although she is best known (so far) for the Love at Stake series, which has hit as high as number 5 on the New York Times list and 22 on the USA Today list, she hopes her readers will love The Embraced as much as they did her merry band of vamps and shifters.
