The Wicked Captain (Blackhaven Brides #13) by Mary Lancaster. Historical Romance Release & ARC Review.

A dreadful poem inspires a treasure hunt and wicked temptation…

When a lame young officer presents widow Eve Cramond with an atrocious love poem penned by her late husband, she knows John is trying to tell her something from beyond the grave—namely, the location of valuable jewels stolen from his mother. With the help of Captain Lawrence, she tries to decipher his meaning and discover the treasure that could save her children from penury and release her from the unwelcome duty of begging financial help from her husband's cousin, the Earl of Braithwaite.

But, of course, life isn't so simple. Lawrence proves to be a dangerous distraction in his own right, and for the first time ever, Eve contemplates taking a lover…

Still recovering from a serious war injury, the easy going and reckless Lawrence is in Blackhaven for a reunion with his old friends. He anticipates a great deal of long-missed carousing, though he does not expect to play the highwayman or to fall in love with his late colonel's lady.

Worse, Bonaparte is back in Paris, and the allies are massing to defeat him once and for all. Lawrence refuses to let his injury stand in the way of fighting in this last battle, but there are other obstacles, including prison—and Eve, whom he can—t bear to leave.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

After a year of convalescence Captain Charles Lawrence is at last fit enough to deliver a message to the family of a fallen comrade.  The town of Blackhaven with it's healing waters will prove to have more benifits than he could imagine.
Mrs Eve Cramond is staying with her husband's family for a short holiday.  Her sister hopes that the wealthy family members will offer financial help because of the children.  Eve hates the idea of begging but her children have needs.  Although maybe the message the Captain has bought could help.
A lovely mystery to solve with very amusing characters.  There are lots of friendships in this story both newly formed and those formed in war.  A lighthearted read where we meet characters from previous books in the series.  This book can easily be read on it's own.
Good fun.

Megara
We all know the story.
How it ended.
He survived and conquered each task.
Became the hero of all heroes.
And in the end he became a legend.
What no one told you is that I was there. I was helping him . . . and when he ascended, I was left behind to rot.
Herakles never knew I sold my soul for his success—he didn’t need to. Had I been enough on my own, he would’ve chosen to stay.
Instead, he rose to full glory.
I was dragged straight to Hades.
Beaten.
Violated.
Broken.
Eventually, mutated.
I lost track of him for nearly three millennia, but I’ve found him.
I will kill him.
He chose to become a god; I was forced to become a nightmare.
Now it’s time for us to meet again.
Herakles
I abandoned my family mere moments before the Greek pantheon fell.
‘Till this day the whispers accuse me.
Had I been there, perhaps they could’ve been saved.
But I no longer gave a fuck.
Funny how vanity can blind a male to what really matters.
It took less than a year on Olympus before I began searching for her again.
I never found her.
Now, two-in-a-half-thousand years later, here I am.
Alone.
Empty.
An immortal ghost, simply getting by.
I should’ve never left her.
The only thing I had was hoping the last of her mortal days, wherever she ended up, were happy . . .
Joke’s on me.
A darkened, twisted version of my female returns, demanding my head for every one of my sins.
And she shall have it.
But first, I’m saving her from her curse.
I’ll sacrifice every ounce of my sanity left to free her . . . right before I let her end me once and for all.
